Tipsy Tuesday: Hot Toddy

Feb 18, 2014 | Other | 2 comments

Hi All,

I know that I missed Supper Sunday this week- and it’s because I’m sick, ugh. One of those nasty chest colds that feels like something clawed its way down your throat then died in your chest- leaving you trying to painfully cough it up for the next few days. (yes I get more dramatic with illness)

So what did I do? I abandoned my Supper Sunday plans and my apartment to retreat home so my mom could take care of me 🙂 – which means I am now snuggled, sniffling on the couch with my fluffy white dog, watching a variety of movies and Supernatural with my mom- which is definitely as good as it gets when you’re sick.

It is especially good when you are also sipping a Hot Toddy- something I feel I will be living on for the next few days. The combination of lemon, spices and whiskey just really do it for me in times of illness.

This recipe is for a litre of Hot Toddies- because I like to make it up in a thermal carafe and drink them through the day

Hot Toddy

4 cups boiling water
1 whole lemon (squeeze half for the juice, cut up the other half)
1 inch of ginger
6 cloves
2 star anise
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Per Cup:

drizzle of honey (approx. 2 tsp)
as much whiskey as you want (approx 1 oz- although you should consider how many of these you plan to drink, if you are on your eighth you can omit the whiskey…)
ground nutmeg over the top

Cut the lemon in half- squeeze half of your lemon and put the juice into your thermal carafe, then cut up the other half and add that in as well, cut your ginger into four pieces and throw that in along with the cloves, star anise and cinnamon. Allow this to steep together for 5 minutes before pouring your first cup.

Add your honey and whiskey to your glass then pour your steeped lemon-spiced water over. Grind some fresh nutmeg over the top then stir to make sure the honey is evenly distributed.

Drink until you feel marginally better and indulge in the comfort that this drink brings- make sure you are snuggled in bed or on a comfy surface when you drink this.

This is the progress that I made with this drink in hand- from the kitchen to the bedroom- the most I have moved all day!

I hope you are all having a wonderfully illness-free Tipsy Tuesday, and if you are sick like me- do make yourself this drink!
