Mom Monday: Lace-edge Undies, Cloning Your Favourites!

Aug 19, 2014 | Other | 5 comments

Hi All,

This Monday mom surprised me by cloning one of my favourites- a pair of undies!

I’ve had these undies for a while and I love them, super comfy boy short style, and with the lace edge leg they’re great for having a smooth edge that doesn’t show through clothes.

But as with every clothing item you love- it can’t last forever. Especially if you leave your laundry on the floor in a house with a dog, a dog that has a special taste for women’s underwear… gross.

However, if you have an amazing mom like I do, she just might surprise you with a clone of them!!

And most helpfully a picture tutorial of how she did it! 🙂 YAY for blogging mom!!

So first she cut the undies apart at the front, back and crotch seam- you don’t need a side seam on a boy short- and flattened the pattern piece down snipping along the elastic to make it lie flat.

Then she traced a pattern – marking the line for the lace. – It’s also handy to put a name and date on the pattern 🙂

Then she cut it out of this super soft stretch cotton 🙂 It was such an amazing match to the lace on my old undies that she cut it off and used it for the new ones!

Stitching on the stretch lace with a twin needle.

Serging up the center seam 🙂

Stitching on the gusset lining.

Then trimming away all the fabric under the lace with some applique scissors.

The final step is the top band elastic!

Oh and a bow of course!! 🙂

Such a fantastic pair of undies 🙂 LOVE LOVE LOVE them! Thanks mom- best surprise ever!

Do you ever clone any of your favourite clothes? How did it work out for you?

What a nice mom! Thanks for sharing the tutorial. I'm curious, does that CB seam bother you when walking or sitting? I'm sure it's soft, but usually a tag or seam in the back I am highly aware of throughout the day.

I cloned a RTW top (all in knits) and made it in woven+knit once and am working on a 2nd version of it. https://www.calmundertension.com/blog/auditioning-fabrics-dia-de-los-muertos-by-heather-ross I really enjoy wearing the top and it's a fun way to use up teeny tiny bits of playful quilting cottons.

I'm working on cloning a pair of underwear now. I also tore apart 3 pair of jeans that were too big, traced all the patterns, much like your mom did, then kept the jeans material for a later project. I really wanted to see what all the crotch curves looked like. Some fit well, others did not. It was an interesting exercise. I must play more with the traced patterns. I've mastered fitting leggings at the hip, crotch, waist, thigh area, yet need to work on the knee area. But I have not mastered fitting trousers, pants, or jeans.

Wow that sounds like a lot of cloning! I find once you start working with knits it's so much easier to fit with the stretch- but I would love to get more into fitting pants and things too.

About the undies- I don't find that a CB seam bother me at all- it is very soft, and there is no big tag at the top, so I really don't even notice it- and I find that quite often the fit of undies with a CB seam is just a little better for me 🙂 Good luck with all your sewing projects!!

I tried cloning some underwear I love recently… but it was an epic fail. I think the fabric I tried to reproduce them with had a different amount/direction of stretch, and… seriously, just an epic fail. I'll be perusing your blog a lot to figure out what I need to do differently!

Oh no! I should do a post about undies in the future! It is very important to match the amount of stretch though- or they will be too tight! 🙂 But please browse away on my blog 🙂
