Supper Sunday: Teriyaki Ribs & Turnip Fries

This Sunday I have a rib recipe for you all, and this is what I like to call a winter rib recipe since I don’t make them on the BBQ, but I suppose you could do these on the BBQ if you wanted. But they are super tender and tasty! And they go really well with these turnip fries- a healthier alternative to potatoes!

For the teriyaki sauce

1 tbsp corn starch
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup soya sauce
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1 clove of garlic minced
1/2 tsp ginger (dry, ground)
1/4 tsp pepper

1 1/2 -2 lbs pork side ribs
salt & pepper

Turnip Fries

1/2 a turnip (or as much as you want)
2 tsp coconut oil
seasoning salt & pepper

To prepare your ribs make sure that you take the membrane off the back- because this will stay tough even when your ribs are cooked- I find it easier to do this with a paper towel because it is slippery and the paper towel has more grip.

Then put your ribs bone side down on a roasting pan in foil (your going to make a pouch out of foil for them) and sprinkle them salt and pepper. Now close up the foil around them and pop them in the oven for 1 1/2 hours at 350 F.

Now while they are cooking away, you can make the sauce for them.

In a saucepan, mix the cornstarch with the white sugar (to prevent lumps) add all the rest of the ingredients mixing all together. Bring it all to a boil and reduce to a simmer until it has thickened and has taken on a nice sauce consistency.

At the end of the 1 1/2 hours, take your ribs out of the oven, open the foil and coat them in the sauce, pop them back in the oven with the foil open and continue to cook them for another 1/2 hour, letting the sauce bake into them.

Now during that 1/2 hour you can make your turnip fries to go with them. Simply slice up your turnip into fry shapes.

Then put them in a frying pan, with about 1/4 -1/2 and inch of water and put the lid on, steaming them until they are fairly tender but still hold together. Drain any leftover water away and add the coconut oil, frying the turnip until it is nice and browned on the outside, sprinkling with your seasoning salt.

Now take your ribs out of the oven & plate them up!

If you find the sauce has really baked into them you can spoon some more of the remaining sauce over them, also you can serve them with the remaining sauce as a dip!

These are super flavourful and overall pretty easy to make, and they were a really great family dinner- my grandpa loves these!
