Hi All!
This is a SUPER easy modification of the Friday French Cuts pattern. It combines the best of both the lace View A/B, and the fabric View C/D. This idea came about when I wanted a panty to match my latest bra make, a lace overlay style with our Wild Thing lace, and thought- why not just add lace to the fabric View C/D!
The only pattern piece you need for the modification is the Front, and you can use either the View C thong, or View D full back version just the same.
For the pair in the pictures that I made, I measured 2″ down from the top edge on the center fold line of the panty. This is where the lace edge will be at the center, so if you want a more dramatic ‘V’ shape you can make this lower, or you can make it higher it’s completely a preference so do whatever works for your design 🙂
Next you use the mark you made to draw a straight line to the side seam, I picked a spot in the middle of the side seam, but again this is preference, you could draw your lace line to end anywhere you like, even in the waist edge or the leg edge- so many options!
Once you have your line, trace your new Lace Overlay pattern piece, adding a 1/4″ seam allowance along the center front to sew your lace together.
Use the Lace Overay piece to cut your your lace, with a right and left. Make sure to place your lace so the seam lines at the center front and side seam are at the edge of the lace. Cut all your other pieces the Front, Gusset & Back as you usually would for the pattern.
Sew the lace overlay pieces together along the center front and topstitch, then lay it overtop of the main fabric for the front (in this case I’ve used bra tulle), and treat theses two layers like they are one. If you would like, you can sew the lace down to the tulle to secure it with a zig-zag stitch, or you can add a couple little backstitches here and there to hold it in place, but I tend to leave it loose so there is no extra stitching to interrupt the lace edge.
Then sew the panty together and apply elastic as shown in the pattern instructions.
It always surprises me how simple modifications can make such a difference to a pattern and make it look like a whole new style. I love how this pattern hack is such a good match for a bra with a lace overlay and fold over elastic edge, It would also be a great match for the Jordy Bralette Lace Overlay view and would be perfect if your lace is a bit too narrow for the regular Friday French Cut Lace option (although we do have another tutorial for that!).
If you give this tutorial a try make sure to tag me or let me know in the comments! I’d love to see what you make!
